May 30, 2017

Date of visit May 2017

Reviewer Eric Stutman, Top Choice College Consulting

School visited University of Denver, Denver, CO

Vital stats

5,800 undergrads, 46% male, 11:1 student:faculty ratio.

Private, Urban/suburban, founded in 1864.

86% freshman retention rate.

76% 6-year graduation rate.

76% acceptance rate.

Tuition and fees about $46,000.

Getting there

Denver is about a 30 minute drive or train ride from Denver International Airport.

Surrounding area

Part of Denver, but somewhat suburban looking with apartments, homes, and restaurants.

Curb appeal

Varied architecture, but very pretty overall.

Campus

125 acre campus, with the rocky mountains visible in the background. A lot of green space and water features throughout campus. Not many dining options.

Housing

Two dorms are for first year students only, two are for sophomores, and one is for both freshmen and sophomores. Options include living/learning communities, theme floors, and classrooms in the dorms.

Academics

Over 100 degree programs including business, engineering, theatre and music.

Food

3 main cafeterias, plus a few retail options like Einstein Bagels and Subway sandwiches. Unlimited meal plans or 50, 100, or 125 per 10-week semester.

Library

One seen on the tour. Nothing unusual to report.

Greek life

About 25% of students join one of 22 fraternities and sororities, which have been at U. Denver since 1889.

Sports

Division 1, part of the Summit league. This medium sized school wins national titles in hockey, lacrosse, and skiing, despite being a lot smaller than other universities, which creates a lot of pride for the Pioneer teams.

Religion

No affiliation.

Getting in

About 76% overall acceptance rate. About 60% of students are from out of state. Offers early decision I and II, and early action and regular decision deadlines.

Demonstrated interest is a factor in admission.

Eric's opinion, not fact

U. Denver is very attractive for many reasons. Location: 300+ sunny days a year, beautiful campus minutes from downtown Denver and close to great skiing. Not very difficult to get accepted and offers a lot of merit scholarships. Also nice that a school this size has a business, engineering, and music school.
